UK proposes law to expand police powersMarch 2021
The UK is proposing a new law that would give police more power to control street demonstrations.
The proposal has sparked protests and been criticized as a threat to freedom of expression, reports BBC News.
If approved the law would give the police the authority to decide when a protest starts and finishes. The police would also be able to set a limit on how loud a protest can be. That would apply even when it’s only one person demonstrating.
The proposal known as the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill also includes harder punishment for certain crimes, including the possibility for life-imprisonment for child murderers.
