Destruction of forests accelerated in 2020April 2021
The rate of destruction of forests around the world was much higher than average in 2020.
Last year was the third-worst year for forest destruction in the past two decades. That’s according to data collected by University of Maryland and Global Forest Watch, reports The Guardian.
This trend is a catastrophe for humans in every country on Earth. Forests play a key role in reducing the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Shrinking forests worsen the ongoing climate crisis.
The most severe destruction last year took place in tropical forests in South America, Africa and Southeast Asia.
