The book On Writing by Stephen King is part memoir part writing-for-dummies-guide that should be read by anyone aspiring to become a writer.
In the book, King - whose best-selling titles include Pet Sematary, It, and Doctor Sleep - uses examples from himself as well as from other famous authors to show how to work with stories and improve at the craft of writing.
One spoiler is that he recommends reading a lot. To write a novel you should read many novels.
