‘Sevan’ by teen author Derek Schmitz: An excerptJune 2021
Sixteen-year-old author Derek Schmitz recently published Sevan: A Gay, Disabled Teen Romance, a novel about the complicated friendship between teenagers Evan and Sam.
Evan is a funny, smart, disabled teen who’s deeply in love with his loyal and able-bodied best friend Sam. But Evan’s too scared to come out as bi and tell Sam he loves him.
Derek shares an excerpt here:
“ “Evan? You awake, honey?” Janet called down the hallway.
Evan groaned. “Conscious, yes, but able to move? No.”
“Can Sam help?” She asked him.
“He could, but he’s out cold and I don’t want to wake him,” Evan replied.
“He’s been your best friend since second grade, through all your disability flares and even through your coming out. Plus, he’s the only one strong enough to physically move you. He’s basically your caregiver at this point. Do you really think he’d mind moving you and then going back to sleep?” she asked.
“I guess not. I don’t know what I would do without him. I can’t even imagine it,” Evan replied, before turning to Sam, who was laying on the makeshift bed he set up on the floor. “Sam?” Evan whispered. “Huh?” Sam asked groggily.
“I need help getting up,” Evan told him. “If you don’t mind, of course.”
“Me, mind? You know I will do anything and everything I can to help you, in a heartbeat,” Sam replied, getting up and moving to Evan’s bed. “You ready?” Sam asked.
“Yeah,” Evan said, moving his arms up.
“One...two...three, up,” Sam said as he expertly pulled Evan up and placed him seated on his pillows.
“There you go.”
“Thanks, dude,” Evan said. “Gonna go back to sleep?”
“Nah, I’ll stay up,” Sam replied, stretching, as he went into the kitchen to grab breakfast. ”
